How long can I remain in Mexico on Each Status?
- Visitor: Up to 180 days
- Temporary Resident: 180 Days to 1 year
- Long Term: Up to 4 years, if not seeking permanent residency
Can my dependents accompany me to Mexico?
Dependents can accompany employees, unless they are traveling on a visitor visa. Partners/Same Sex Partners are recognized as dependents.
How long can my visa be extended?
Visas can be extended for Long Term visas. Extensions can be 1, 2, or 3 years.
When do I need to file for an extension?
Extensions are to be filed within 30 days of the work permits expiration.
What documents do I need to bring to the airport for my visitor visa?
- Passport
- Flight reservation in which it is properly mentioned the return trip (printed)
- Hotel reservation (printed)
- Invitation letter (printed)
What are red flags and/or special criteria?
- Common documents such as birth and marriage certificates need to be apostilled in many occasions.
- Mexican government released a program in which foreigners who have been in Mexico prior to 2022, qualify to have temporary residence for 4 years without proving are related to a Mexican national, residents in Mexico or have a job offer.
- Extensions are not permitted on a visitor visa.
- Visitor visa can be approved for up to 180 days; however, it is at the discretion of the Mexican authorities. Visitor visas may only be approved for 30, 60, or 90 days.
Do I need a visitor visa if I am staying in Mexico for under 180 days?

Where do I apply for my Mexico Visa?
Employees must apply for their visas at a Mexico consulate in their home country. In-person presence is required unless you are a national of one of the following exempted countries which are eligible to apply online: Turkey, Russia, and Ukraine.
How long does it take to collect information and submit the application?
1-3 weeks.
How soon can I begin working?
Upon arrival, given that you have obtained your Mexico Visa.
What documents are required from my employer?
Visitor Visa
- Signed invitation letter on company letter head.
Temporary Residency Card
- Corporate documents:
- Copy of the employer’s registry of the company.
- Original of the ID of the legal representative.
Are there deregistration processes for Mexico?
No.
